Australian soprano Kiandra Howarth is a graduate of Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, where she completed a Bachelor of Music (Honours) in 2010. From 2009 to 2012, she was a Young Artist with both Opera Queensland and Opera Australia, making her international debut in 2012 as Norina in Don Pasquale in Tokyo.
Later that year, she undertook a year of intensive study at Mozarteum University Salzburg, performing the role of the Contessa in Le nozze di Figaro. During this period, she also made her Italian debut as Belinda in Dido and Aeneas at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. In the summer of 2013, she joined the prestigious Young Singers Project at the Salzburg Festival, where her appearances included Konstanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Pamina in Die Zauberflöte, Der Friedensbote in Rienzi, and Voce dal Cielo in Don Carlos.
From 2013 to 2015, Kiandra was a member of the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House. During her tenure, she appeared in numerous mainstage productions, including Zweites Blumenmädchen in Parsifal, Sœur Constance in Dialogues des Carmélites, Echo in Ariadne auf Naxos, and both Adina and Giannetta in L’elisir d’amore. She also gave solo recitals and performed at distinguished London venues including Wigmore Hall, Cadogan Hall, and the Barbican Centre.
Following her time in London, Kiandra established a flourishing international career with performances across Europe, the UK, and Asia. Highlights include Donna Anna in Don Giovanni in Basel, Luxembourg, Guangzhou, and Nancy; Zweites Blumenmädchen in Parsifal at Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and the Berliner Philharmonie; Pamina and Erste Dame in Die Zauberflöte at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Bayerische Staatsoper, and the Royal Opera House; Dorotka in Schwanda der Dudelsackpfeifer at Komische Oper Berlin; Freia in Das Rheingold at Opernhaus Zürich and the Royal Opera House; and appearances in 7 Deaths of Maria Callas at the Bayerische Staatsoper. Her repertoire further includes leading roles such as Mimì in La bohème, the title roles in Iris, Arabella, and Rusalka, as well as Regan in Lear.
Since 2021, Kiandra has been a member of the ensemble at Staatsoper Hannover, where her roles have included Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte, Desdemona in Otello, Contessa in Le nozze di Figaro, the title role in Alcina, Mimì in La bohème, Madame Lidoine in Dialogues des Carmélites, and the title role in Rusalka. In the 2023–24 season, she appeared as Freia in Das Rheingold at both the Royal Opera House and Opernhaus Zürich, and made company debuts as Desdemona in Otello with Oper Leipzig and Magda in La Rondine with Victorian Opera.
In the 2024–25 season, Kiandra reprised several signature roles and made notable debuts, including the title role in Arabella at Bühnen Bern and Die Feldmarschallin in Der Rosenkavalier with Staatsoper Hannover. She also returned to Opera Australia in summer 2025 as the Contessa in Sir David McVicar’s acclaimed production of Le nozze di Figaro.
In 2025, Kiandra made her role debut in the title role of Manon Lescaut for Bühnen Bern and stepped in for Diana Damrau as Die Feldmarschallin in Der Rosenkavalier in Lydia Steier’s production at Opernhaus Zürich. Early 2026 brought an acclaimed debut as Liù in Turandot with Staatsoper Hannover, alongside further success in her role debut as Marietta/Marie in Die tote Stadt. In June 2026, she makes her debut at Het Concertgebouw, performing Queen Tye in Akhnaten in a concert performance conducted by Karen Kamensek.
Looking ahead to the 2026–27 season, Kiandra returns to Opernhaus Zürich, Komische Oper Berlin, and Staatsoper Hannover, alongside a company debut at New National Theatre Tokyo, reprising the role of Die Feldmarschallin. Upcoming role debuts include Lisa in Pique Dame, the title role in Madama Butterfly, and Queen Tye in Akhnaten.
